SEO for tradies in Australia

SEO for tradies means making your business easy to find when someone nearby searches for your trade. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete Business Profile and a website that names your trade and area build relevance, and genuine reviews build prominence. Nobody can pay Google for a better local ranking.

What does SEO for tradies involve?

SEO is the work that helps your business appear when someone searches for what you do. When someone searches for a trade near them, Google shows local results.

Google says local results are based primarily on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your Business Profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the location in the search or from the person searching. Prominence is how well known your business is, and Google says review count and review score factor into it.

You cannot change where your business is, so the work goes into relevance and prominence.

If I get my work from referrals, why pay for SEO?

If your diary is full and you do not want more work, you do not need it. If you want to depend less on a handful of referrers, search puts you in front of people who have never heard of you.

The two also overlap. Someone who gets your name from a friend can search for it, and what they find is your Business Profile and your website. SEO decides whether those are complete and current.

What should a tradie fix first?

  1. Claim and verify your Business Profile. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.
  2. Fill in every field. That includes your phone number, hours, business category and attributes, and your address if customers visit you.
  3. Say what you do and where you work on your website. Name your trade and your suburbs or region in headings and text, in the words a customer would type.
  4. Ask customers for reviews. Google suggests sharing your review link or QR code. It prohibits discounts or free goods in exchange for a review, so offer nothing in return.
  5. Reply to your reviews. Google lists replies as a way to show customers their feedback matters.

How long does SEO take for a tradie?

Our working expectation is three to six months before a new section of a website moves in a way you can measure, and longer for a site with little history. We do not promise a position, a timeline to a position or a traffic figure. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so be cautious of anyone who says otherwise.

Do tradies need a new website for SEO?

Not always. A site that names your trade and area, shows how to contact you, loads on a phone and stays current does the basic job. If yours does not, our Webflow website design for owner-operators starts from $9,999 ex GST for a Starter plan of up to five pages, and from $14,999 ex GST for a Growth plan.

Questions tradies ask about SEO

Can I pay Google to rank higher locally?

No. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Am I allowed to ask customers for reviews?

Yes. Google’s guidance is to remind customers to leave reviews, using a link or QR code. You cannot offer a discount or anything else in return.

Is a Business Profile enough without a website?

A Business Profile gives Google the basics: your category, contact details and hours. A website gives Google and customers more detail about what you do and where. Keep both accurate.
